EUCHL Approves In-Season Professional Call-Up Rule to Strengthen Player Development Pathway
The European Union College Hockey League (EUCHL) has officially approved a new player movement rule that will allow eligible athletes to temporarily move up to professional hockey teams during the season for practices and game participation opportunities.
The rule, passed through league voting this week, is designed to expand player development opportunities while strengthening the connection between the EUCHL and professional hockey organizations across Europe.
Under the new policy, EUCHL players in good standing may be called up by professional clubs during the season without permanently forfeiting their collegiate eligibility, provided they meet league and team requirements. Players will be permitted to participate in professional team practices and, in approved circumstances, appear in professional games before returning to their EUCHL clubs.
“This is a major step forward for the growth of our athletes and our league,” said league officials,. “The EUCHL was founded to create elite competitive opportunities while supporting education and long-term player development. This new rule gives our players direct exposure to the professional level while maintaining their commitment to their university teams.”
League officials noted that the decision reflects the evolving landscape of international hockey development, where flexibility and exposure are increasingly important for advancing athletes to higher levels of competition.
The rule is expected to:
- Provide EUCHL players with valuable professional experience
- Increase scouting visibility for collegiate athletes
- Strengthen partnerships between university and professional organizations
- Enhance the overall competitiveness and reputation of the EUCHL
Professional teams participating in these temporary call-ups will coordinate directly with EUCHL clubs to ensure player availability, academic responsibilities, and league scheduling are respected throughout the process.
Coaches and general managers across the league have expressed strong support for the initiative, viewing it as an important bridge between collegiate hockey and professional careers.
“This creates an incredible opportunity for our players to test themselves at the next level while continuing to compete and develop within the EUCHL,” said Karol Fako, Head Coach of the Bratislava Capitals. “It benefits the players, the universities, and the professional clubs alike.”
The new rule will take effect beginning with the upcoming EUCHL season.
